A Little Girl Needs Daddy

The inception of Father’s Day took place when Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, in the United States happened to hear a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Sonora, who was then 27, thought of the hardships her Civil War veteran father had gone through in bringing up six children singlehandedly since her mother passed away during childbirth when she was only 16. Sonora, married and mother of a son by then, soon began her campaign for the official recognition of Father’s Day.She approached the Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) with the idea of celebrating Father’s Day and received their support. As a result, Spokane celebrated its First Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. In 1916, United States President Thomas Woodrow Wilson approved the nationwide celebration of Father’s Day. And by the time Sonora’s father, William Smart, passed away in 1919, Father’s Day had become a popular occasion in the US.
