Defense was once synonymous with Chicago Bears. But the Bears' D has fallen on hard times, and his reputation to intimidate is not what it once was. "I think it's over," said Vikings receiver Bernard Berrian, who played for the Bears from 2004 to 2007. "People are intimidated, who they are around, which is not working for them anymore.
"But they still have outstanding players there.
Bears defense ranked second in the NFL in 2005 and fifth in 2006. In 2007, the last season Berrian in Chicago, the unit was ravaged with injuries and finished 28 th.
Defense was the 21st last season and 13th this season.
Bears defense 23rd run, and they do not create as many game-changing plays.
One of the best playmakers struggled on and off the field.
Six time Pro Bowl middle midfielder Brian Urlacher have been disappointing 2008, and he suffered season-ending dislocated wrist injury in 2009 season opener.
"Urlacher time of huge for them," said Berrian. "It makes a big difference in their defense."
With 4-6 record, including three game loss, bears desperately need a victory on Sunday.
"This is a must win for them," Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said. "This is their season, so they are going to come and play better.
Added Bryant McKinnie left the decision, "We did not expect them to just come and lay down."
